Differentiation Within a Mastery Context

Course Outcomes:

-       To support teachers to differentiate effectively within a mastery mathematics curriculum

-       To identify the big mathematical ideas that underpin learning of key concepts

-       How equipment and images can be used to build conceptual understanding

-       To give children opportunities to work at greater depth within year group expectations

This course will explore how to plan sequences of lessons that build mastery for all children in primary mathematics. This includes how maths knowledge can be built conceptually using equipment and images; how to help children with lower attainment to build understanding; and how to provide opportunities for learning at greater depth. Training will focus on identifying the key concepts or ‘big ideas’ that underpin the learning. We will look at a range of open tasks, and how through skilful adult support understanding can be built and learning deepened to give all children the appropriate level of challenge. It will show teachers how to plan sequences of lessons in line with the principles of teaching for mastery whilst meeting the needs of all children. A range of ideas and resources for developing mathematical reasoning that supplement schemes of work will be shared.

Achieving Greater Depth in a Mastery Context

Course Outcomes:

-       To explore how children can develop a deep understanding of big mathematical ideas

-       To have a range of strategies and ideas for applying skills with greater flexibility within age-related objectives

-       To share examples of how children’s outcomes may differ when working at greater depth

This course will exemplify what ‘working at greater depth’ looks like in KS1 and KS2 mathematics. We will explore how, through a range of visual and thought-provoking experiences, children can develop a deep, rich understanding of maths concepts. Ideas and resources will be shared that will give children the opportunity to extend their thinking, work in open-ended contexts and apply their knowledge with greater flexibility. We will also look at the way in which learning outcomes may differ for children working at greater depth whilst operating within the same year-group objectives.

Trainers Pen Portrait

Tara Loughran

Tara has extensive experience in schools for leading improvement and change in mathematics. She has provided high quality training for the St Helens TSA since becoming at teaching school in 2013; she has inspired lots of teachers and support staff to take her ideas back to the classroom with significant impact. Tara represents NW Maths Hub 3 across the North West and sits on the Executive board.

Teachers have commented:

  • Quick wins, easily applied and adapted ideas. Instant impact!!
  • Fun, practical activities, used daily, the children love them!
  • Children challenge each other’s thinking; this is done independently rather than being provoked/promoted by the teacher.
  • A really thought provoking, inspirational session packed with lots of ideas that I will definitely be taking back to school.
  • A thoroughly enjoyable day, she gave activities with twists that will have impact. A great insight into how to adapt activities for different levels and time saving ideas. Tara is truly inspirational!!
  • I now have a ‘deeper’ understanding of how to ensure my children ‘Master’ the mathematics.
  • True quality! This session has improved my own subject knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and also given me a better progressional understanding.
